Research into Deep UV-LEDs began with a Nobel Prize winner in Physics

Nikkiso was quick to recognize the potential and possibilities of Deep UV-LEDs, which had been considered difficult to put into practical use. In 2006, Nikkiso established UV Craftory Co., Ltd.,
which is a commercialization venture specializing in short-wavelength UV-LEDs in Meijo University, together with Professor Akasaki and Professor Amano, to seek further possibilities for nitride semiconductors with the guidance of the two professors.

Mass production development of Deep UV-LEDs with the world’s highest output and a long product life was successful

In 2008, we started off by succeeding in stable light output from the Deep UV-LEDs, and in 2010, we set a world record for light emission with an external quantum efficiency of over 3%. We have made repeated technical improvements since then. In 2015, we succeeded in the development of mass production technology for the Deep UV-LEDs with a light output of 50 mW (1.7 times that of conventional products), which was the world’s highest output, and with a product life of more than 10,000 hours.

“M.ReT” is now available for visitors to experience infection control ideas

As the pioneer in the industry, Nikkiso is actively involved in the implementation of Deep UV-LEDs. At M.ReT Miyazaki, a research and training facility that began operating in Miyazaki Prefecture in
2021 to provide training in how to operate medical equipment for medical personnel, infection control measures using advanced technology is being implemented. In addition, an “infection control room” has been set up to exhibit the latest products including the Deep UV-LEDs so that visitors can actually experience Nikkiso’s infection control ideas.

As a next generation light source that makes the world a safer place

The Deep UV-LEDs are expected to be a next generation light source, as they are considered to be significantly superior to the mercury lamps which were used as a light source for purification of
water and air, resin curing, and photocatalysis. We will pursue further applications in various fields for the Deep UV-LEDs by taking advantage of synergy with Nikkiso’s existing businesses to provide safety throughout the world.
